about

Like a repeating motif, the vocals on this song are a sample of Suzanne’s vocals from the band's 1994 song, “Depression Glass.” While "Madras" samples and loops the full lyrical phrase, "Promises of love and light, promises of grace," here Ryan simply played the single word "promise" forwards then backwards and then forwards again.

Some have compared this near-instrumental to "Miranda" by Slowdive, who were certainly an influence on the band at this time, 'Pygmalion," having just been released the year before. But Ryan's take on the acoustic guitar, voice sample, and arpeggiated atmospherics isn't nearly as dark and sounds almost playful in comparison.
