about

The original version of "Sideways Forest" is a wistful mix of folk acoustic and ambient trip hop vibes graced by bittersweet vocals.

Ryan told journalist, Bryan Reeseman, in a 1997 'Acoustic Guitar' magazine interview,

"'Sideways Forest' is in a weird tuning which I learned from seeing the setlist of a Red House Painters show on the Internet. I saw one that looked interesting and I tried it, and that's how 'Sideways Forest' came about."

Interestingly, this was the only song ever to be released in a CD single format, appearing alongside a more electronic mix created by Ryan, called the "Quantuum Mix," and a B-side instrumental, called "Amarillo,"which also appears on this reissue.

The 2017 digital release of the "Sideways Forest" single features an additional mix unearthed from the band's archive. This "Acoustic Mix" also appears on this reissue album, but a live recording of the "Quantuum Mix," can only be found on the expanded 'Sideways Forest EP' --

lyrics

Sky's the same as it always was
Nothing we do
So hard to keep anything
When you're expected to

This is the time when water stops
History dies with you
Like rings of trees in sideways forest
Forgetting

Lands change in the same ways
Like waves and words
Better not to watch at all
This changes everything

This is the time when water stops
History dies with you
Like rings of trees in sideways forest
Forgetting

This is the time when water stops
History dies with you
Like rings of trees in sideways forest
Forgetting
